International Exchange Programme

Who can participate in the International Exchange Programme?


Students on almost all degree programmes are eligible to apply to participate in the International Exchange Programme. 

*Please note the following exceptions:
Students from the following discipline areas are NOT currently able to participate in the International Exchange Programme:
  • Computing/Informatics
  • Dentistry
  • Electric/Electronic Engineering 
  • Human Communication
  • Medicine (except with European Studies)
  • Nursing
  • Optometry
  • Pharmacy 
  • Social Work
  • Speech Therapy
  • Management, Leadership and Leisure

** If you are pursuing a degree programme 'with Industrial/Professional Experience', you generally cannot apply for the International Exchange Programme in addition to your 'Industrial/Professional Experience'. The preparation period for 'Industrial/Professional Experience' usually conflicts with the International Exchange Programme period abroad. Do explore the opportunities to undertake your Industrial/Professional Experience abroad.



International Exchange Programme Eligibility requirements

For the majority of discipline areas the eligibility requirements are as follows:
  • 60% minimum academic average.  

*Note that higher academic averages are required by the following subject areas:
Chemistry (65%)
Earth Sciences (65%)
Economics (70%)
Physics (70%)
Social Anthropology (63%)
 
  • Demonstration of an A-level or equivalent language ability to participate in exchanges where teaching provision is not in English.
  • A satisfactory attendance record (except where mitigating circumstances have been recorded and accepted).

Medicine with European Studies
 

When can I go?


If you are pursuing a degree in the following discipline areas you have the opportunity to study abroad for a full year in your third year as part of a four year degree programme:
  • Chemistry (MChem)
  • Criminology
  • Criminology & Law
  • Earth Science
  • Economics (BSc)
  • Environmental Science
  • Geography
  • Geography & Geology
  • Law
  • Law and Politics
  • MACE (MEng)
  • Maths (MMath)
  • Politics and International Relations
  • Physics (MPhys)
  • PPE
  • Psychology
  • Social Anthropology
  • Textiles

If you are pursing a degree in any other eligible discipline area you have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in your second year as part of a three year degree and should apply in your first year.  

*There are a small number of exceptions to the above as follows:
  • MMath: Students studying the MMath programme can apply to spend either a semester OR a year abroad during the third year of this four year degree programme.
  • MPlan: Students studying on the MPlan programme go abroad for one semester in year 2 of this four year degree programme.
  • MSci: Students studying on an MSci programme in the School of Biological Sciences go abroad for one semester in year 2 of these four year degree programmes.
  • Social Anthropology:  Students pursuing a degree in Social Anthropology can apply to spend a semester abroad as part of a three year degree programme, and must apply to do so in their first year of study.  Social Anthropology students wishing to apply to study abroad for a full year should apply in their second year as above.
 

Academic Exchange Advisers

In each Academic School there is an Academic Exchange Adviser who is responsible for international programmes. You need your AEA to review and approve your course choices during the application phase and during your exchange, they will support you with academic matters.

You can visit International Programmes Office staff in The Atrium, 1st Floor of University Place. During term time, we also offer a drop in service between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday with our Global Guidance Ambassadors, these are students who studied and worked abroad last year who would like to share their experiences and offer you some help and guidance.
